The Drummond 4-4-0 Express Passenger Locomotives were the basis of many which were to follow, not only on the North British Railway but also on the Caledonian, Highland and LSWR.
Abbotsford was from the first batch of four locomotives built to this design by Neilson & Co of Glasgow in 1876. Number 476 Aberdeen was the first to be compleated but because Abbotsford was the locomotive used for the official photographs the class became known by that name.
A further eight locomotives were built in 1878 and 1879.
